Nap Transition Calculator

Find the typical age for your baby’s next nap change (3 to 2, 2 to 1, or dropping the last nap), the signs to watch for and a gentle transition plan.

Ranges are population guidance, not a prescription or a diagnosis. Individual babies vary; talk to your paediatrician if you are worried about your baby’s sleep.

When do babies change their naps?

Nap counts fall in steps as wake windows grow. Bebblo’s guide uses the age ranges below for the three main transitions. They are typical ages, not deadlines: a baby who is happy, fed and sleeping well on the current schedule does not need to change just because a birthday passed.

TransitionTypical ageWhat to expect
3 to 2 naps5–8 monthsBetween 5–8 months, babies start resisting the third nap. Wake windows lengthen.
2 to 1 nap12–18 monthsOne of the biggest transitions: 12–18 months. Expect disruption for 4–6 weeks.
Dropping the last nap2.5–4 yearsBetween 2.5–4 years, most children drop their final nap. Offer quiet time instead.

For the typical number of naps at each age and the wake windows behind them, see the wake window calculator. Wake-window tables are loose starting points, not a clinical standard — follow your baby’s cues.

How to use the nap transition calculator

Enter your baby’s age (or date of birth) and how many naps they take now. The calculator shows the typical age range for that nap change, where your baby is relative to it, the signs to watch for and a transition tip. Add the morning wake-up time to see where the first nap lands, based on the typical wake window for the age.

If you are not sure how many naps your baby takes, leave that box on “Not sure” and the calculator picks the transition closest to your baby’s age.

Frequently asked questions

When do babies go from 3 naps to 2?

Between about 5 and 8 months, babies start resisting the third nap and wake windows lengthen. Moving the first nap about 15 minutes later each day helps the naps merge gradually.

When do babies go from 2 naps to 1?

Usually between 12 and 18 months. It is one of the biggest transitions, and disrupted sleep for 4–6 weeks is common. During the change, offer one midday nap (12–1 PM) and a slightly earlier bedtime (6:30–7 PM).

When do toddlers drop their last nap?

Most children drop the final nap between 2.5 and 4 years. Offering a daily quiet “rest time” with books or calm toys helps keep the routine.

How do I know my baby is ready to change naps?

Look for a baby who resists a nap, longer wake windows and a daily nap count that has been falling for a week or two. Age ranges are typical, not strict, so follow your baby’s cues.

Is it normal for sleep to get worse during a nap transition?

Yes. Disruption for several weeks is common, especially for the 2 to 1 nap change. If you are worried about your baby’s sleep, talk to your paediatrician.
