A newborn’s diaper is a good indicator of whether they are getting enough to eat. According to AAP HealthyChildren, a baby should have 2 to 3 wet diapers each day in the first few days after birth, and at least 5 to 6 wet diapers a day after the first 4 to 5 days. Stool frequency varies more; by the fourth day a baby should be having at least 4 stools a day, and the exact number depends on how your baby is fed.
| Age | Wet diapers per day | Stools |
|---|---|---|
| First few days after birth | 2–3 | — |
| After the first 4–5 days | at least 5–6 | by day 4, at least 4 a day; varies more |
A diaper count is one clue, not the whole picture. Wet diapers, weight gain, effective swallowing, tone and overall behaviour together give a better picture of intake.
