2 Year Old Sleep Schedule
Two-year-olds sleep 11–14 hours a day, with one afternoon nap and wake windows of 5–6 hours. The challenges shift from biological to behavioural: bedtime resistance, dawn wakings, and the occasional nap strike. A predictable routine, clear limits, and protecting the nap window keep sleep on track through the toddler years.
Sleep schedule · data from paediatric sleep guidelinesWake windows, naps and total sleep
At this age your baby can comfortably stay awake for 5h–6h between sleeps (the "24+ months" band). Most 2 year babies take 1 naps a day and sleep 11–14 hours (day nap + night sleep). Use the wake window — not the clock — as your main signal for when the next sleep is due.

Bedtime routine
A predictable bedtime routine cues your baby that sleep is coming and makes settling easier. At this age, aim for a calm 20–30 minute wind-down in the same order every night. A simple sequence:
- Bath or wash — warm water lowers body temperature, a natural sleep signal.
- Feed — milk in a dim, quiet room; burp well before lying down.
- Book or song — two short books or one familiar lullaby.
- Swaddle or sleeping bag — a clear "sleep time" cue.
- Into the crib drowsy but awake — the single most important sleep-shaping habit at every age.
Lay your baby down calm but not fully asleep so they learn to connect sleep cycles themselves. If they fuss, pause briefly before soothing — many settle within a minute. See our fuller bedtime routine guide for age-by-age variations.
Common sleep challenges at this age
- Bedtime resistance. Two-year-olds push boundaries. Hold a consistent routine, set clear limits ("two books, then sleep"), and respond to escalations calmly and predictably. Most resistance fades within two weeks of consistency.
- Early rising. A 5:30 AM wake often means bedtime is too late (overtired) or the room is too light. Use blackout blinds, a white-noise machine, and treat any wake before 6 AM as a night waking.
- Nap strikes. Around 2, many toddlers try dropping the nap. Most still need it until age 3–3.5. Keep offering "quiet time" in the crib — even if they don't sleep, the rest helps.
Frequently asked questions
What is the wake window for a 2-year-old?
About 5 to 6 hours (300–360 minutes). The morning window to the midday nap is typically 6 hours, and the afternoon window to bedtime a similar length.
Does a 2-year-old need a nap?
Most do. The average age to drop the nap is 3 to 3.5 years. Signs of readiness: consistent nap refusal for two weeks, taking a very long time to fall asleep at nap, or bedtime shifting very late.
What time should a 2-year-old go to bed?
Most settle well with a 7:00–8:00 PM bedtime, depending on the nap. Aim for 10.5–11 hours of night sleep. If bedtime regularly drifts past 8:30 PM, look at shortening or moving the nap earlier.
