17 Month Old Sleep Schedule
By seventeen months the one-nap schedule is usually solid: one midday nap of 1.5–2.5 hours, wake windows of 4.5–5 hours, and total sleep of 11–14 hours. The remaining battles are behavioural — early wakes, bedtime stalling, and the occasional nap protest.

At this age your baby can comfortably stay awake for 3h 30m–4h 30m between sleeps. Most 17 month babies take 1–2 naps a day and sleep 11–14 hours (day nap + night sleep). Use the wake window — not the clock — as your main signal for when the next sleep is due.

Bedtime routine
A predictable bedtime routine cues your baby that sleep is coming and makes settling easier. At this age, aim for a calm 20–30 minute wind-down in the same order every night. A simple sequence:
- Bath or wash — warm water lowers body temperature, a natural sleep signal.
- Feed — milk in a dim, quiet room; burp well before lying down.
- Book or song — two short books or one familiar lullaby.
- Swaddle or sleeping bag — a clear "sleep time" cue.
- Into the crib calm — use a settling approach that is safe and workable for your family.

Common sleep challenges at this age
- Early wakes. Wakes before 6:00 AM usually mean the nap or bedtime needs a nudge, not less sleep. Push the nap 15 minutes later or move bedtime 15 minutes later for a few nights.
- Bedtime stalling. "One more book" is the theme of this age. A visual routine chart and a firm, kind goodnight phrase help more than negotiation.
- Nap protest. A skipped nap at 17 months creates a 12-hour day nobody enjoys. Protect the nap window with quiet time even when sleep does not come.
Frequently asked questions
What is the wake window for a 17-month-old?
About 4.5 to 5 hours (270–300 minutes). Morning window to the nap is typically 5.5 hours; the afternoon window to bedtime 4.5–5 hours.
How many naps at 17 months?
One midday nap of 1.5–2.5 hours. Very few 17-month-olds still need two naps — if yours does, the morning nap should stay short.
What time should a 17-month-old go to bed?
A 7:00–7:30 PM bedtime with a 6:30–7:00 AM wake. Watch the nap end time: a late nap end means a later bedtime.
