5 Month Old Sleep Schedule
At five months, most babies are in the middle of the 4-month sleep regression or just emerging from it. Sleep cycles mature permanently, naps consolidate to three, and wake windows stretch to 105–135 minutes. Consistency and an early bedtime are the tools that carry you through.
Sleep schedule · data from paediatric sleep guidelinesWake windows, naps and total sleep
At this age your baby can comfortably stay awake for 2h–2h 30m between sleeps. Most 5 month babies take 3–4 naps a day and sleep 13–15 hours (day naps + night sleep). Use the wake window — not the clock — as your main signal for when the next sleep is due.

Bedtime routine
A predictable bedtime routine cues your baby that sleep is coming and makes settling easier. At this age, aim for a calm 20–30 minute wind-down in the same order every night. A simple sequence:
- Bath or wash — warm water lowers body temperature, a natural sleep signal.
- Feed — milk in a dim, quiet room; burp well before lying down.
- Book or song — two short books or one familiar lullaby.
- Swaddle or sleeping bag — a clear "sleep time" cue.
- Into the crib calm — use a settling approach that is safe and workable for your family.

Common sleep challenges at this age
- Regression fallout. Frequent night wakes and short naps are normal for a few weeks. Protect the routine and avoid introducing new sleep associations mid-regression.
- Drowsy-but-awake. Five-month-olds are old enough to learn the skill of falling asleep independently. Put your baby down drowsy but awake at least once a day.
- Nap resistance. A fighting baby at nap time is usually overtired, not ready to drop the nap. Shorten the wake window by 15 minutes rather than extending it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the wake window for a 5-month-old?
About 105–135 minutes, stretching slightly across the day. Most 5-month-olds take three naps with 2.5–3.5 hours of daytime sleep.
How many naps at 5 months?
Three naps: two longer ones plus a late catnap to bridge to bedtime. Most babies keep three naps until 6–8 months.
What time should a 5-month-old go to bed?
A 7:00–7:30 PM bedtime works well with a 7:00 AM wake. Keep the last nap ending by 5:00 PM so bedtime stays on track.
