3 Year Old Sleep Schedule
At three, most children are dropping the daytime nap or shifting to quiet rest time. Wake windows reach 5–6+ hours and total sleep is about 10–13 hours. The rhythm is now driven more by consistent routines and preschool schedules than biology. Many still benefit from a protected quiet hour even without sleep. Focus on bedtime resistance, early rising, and building habits that last into school years.
Sleep schedule · data from paediatric sleep guidelinesWake windows, naps and total sleep
At this age your baby can comfortably stay awake for 5h–6h between sleeps. Most 3 year babies take 1 naps a day and sleep 10–13 hours (quiet time + night sleep). Use the wake window — not the clock — as your main signal for when the next sleep is due.

Bedtime routine
A predictable bedtime routine cues your baby that sleep is coming and makes settling easier. At this age, aim for a calm 20–30 minute wind-down in the same order every night. A simple sequence:
- Bath or wash — warm water lowers body temperature, a natural sleep signal.
- Feed — milk in a dim, quiet room; burp well before lying down.
- Book or song — two short books or one familiar lullaby.
- Swaddle or sleeping bag — a clear "sleep time" cue.
- Into the crib calm — use a settling approach that is safe and workable for your family.

Common sleep challenges at this age
- Dropping the nap. Around 3–3.5 years many children stop napping. If they fight it or take forever to settle, switch to "quiet time" in a dim room with books — the rest still helps even if no sleep. Watch for overtired signs in the evening.
- Bedtime resistance & stalling. Preschoolers are experts at "one more story." Use a clear, visual routine chart and a firm "last book, then lights out" with calm follow-through. Consistency beats negotiation.
- Early rising / FOMO. Light, noise, or a too-late bedtime (or skipped rest) can cause 5:30–6 AM wakes. Blackout, white noise, and a slightly earlier bedtime often fix it. Treat pre-6 AM wakes as night wakings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the wake window for a 3-year-old?
About 5 to 6+ hours (300–360+ minutes). With no nap or only quiet time, the full day wake window from morning to bedtime is commonly 11–12 hours split by any rest.
Does a 3-year-old still need a nap?
Most drop the nap between 3 and 3.5 years. If your child is happy, energetic, and sleeps well at night without a nap, it is usually fine to let it go. Keep a quiet rest time for a few months as a buffer.
What time should a 3-year-old go to bed?
Most do well with a 7:00–8:00 PM bedtime for 10.5–11 hours of night sleep. If no nap/quiet time, you may need a slightly earlier bedtime to avoid the "witching hour" meltdown.
